    BrewDog goodie box

    BrewDog goodie box

I got a very excited text from my girlfriend earlier on today, informing me that a rather large box had arrived from a certain Scottish brewery.

I have to admit I was really looking forward to getting home and opening it, so it’s typical that I didn’t get back home until about 8.30pm thanks to work, my own incompetence and a quick trip around Ikea (the downside of living so near one is its so easy to ‘go for a quick wander whilst it’s quiet’!!)

So, I was delighted to get home and realise that Sarah hadn’t been exaggerating, it really was a large goodie box that had arrived!

Unfortunately, the lovely folk at BrewDog might have selected a box that was a little too big, and as I eagerly opened my grandly wrapped package I was greeted with the smell of very strongly scented soggy cardboard and a distinctly beery smell.

My sad face (and sticky fingers) as I disect the undamaged bottles from the Chaos that awaited in my BrewDog goodie box

If you’ve ever worked in a pub you’ll know the smell, it’s the drip trays at the end of the night. It’s not pleasant and it certainly didn’t make Sarah smile as I quickly bundled it from the living room into the kitchen, trying not to drag beer stains into the brand new carpets in the process!

Anyway once I got the soaked cardboard out of the way I was presented with some sticky but nonetheless enticing bottles of 77 Lager, Punk IPA, Chaos Theory and Dogma. I haven’t had 77 Lager so I was pretty excited to get that in the cupboard and I’ll rarely turn down a Punk!

And then, at the bottom, a carcass of bubble wrap, brown shards of glass and BrewDog label, contorted and twisted, in a way only a BrewDog could smash.

I think it’s very apt that the offending article was none other than a bottle of Chaos Theory, a fitting and chaotic entrance onto the Real Ale Reviews beer shelf!

Mystery BrewDog's - what can they be?!

Mystery BrewDog's - what can they be?!

Despite the mess, a massive thanks to James and all at BrewDog for the beer, they will be much enjoyed and of course written about. Particularly these – three unlabelled mystery beers admist the chaos.

Did they just lose their labels in the melee? Are they rebel ‘Dogs that fought their way out?! Or new prototypes accidently slipped in the box?!

It’ll be a test of my beer tasting skills if I can work it out!

Does anyone have any idea what the mystery brews are? If so please let us know! In fact if you guess it right, we’ll share them with you!

  • I love receiving boxes from BrewDog! Shame you had a casualty on the way. Like Andy says, I reckon you might have Punk MOnk (which is bloody lovely) or it could be 5am Saint (equally bloody lovely!). Enjoy!

  • They will definately be the punk monk,
have you had, the mysteries yet? The labels on the case I received were good to go at any moment.

And I hate packaging so many things I have sent through the post have got blasted, I share in deep sympathy for your loss and hope the smell did not put you off veturing forward and sampling this wonderous array of ale. I am pretty certain it did not.

    Put me off? No chance!

We’re actually in a bit of uncertainty over the mystery beers. I had one and it was something else, a herbaceous, maple syrup , nettle-infused wonder (a little too wonderful and herby for my tastebuds actually). When I said Jaipur smelt like a druid’s kitchen I should really have reserved that phrase for my mystery BrewDog.

Anyway Sam (who also writes here) had another of the label-less bottles and thought it was the best BrewDog he’d tried of all their range, and from our reactions I’m not sure it was the same as the one I had sample earlier.

So we’re acutally none the wiser. Only thing we can do is find that last bottle and sample it together and we might be able to solve the mystery of the Mystery BrewDogs!
