Beer and cheese suggestions?
6
December 17th, 2009Beer and FoodOn Sunday a bunch of friends in Leeds are having Christmas dinner. We’ll all be going our separate ways for the festive period so it’s a chance to catch up, eat and drink together, play some board games and enjoying finally admitting that we’re adults with houses now and not students still.
I’m in charge of beer and cheese, after picking some fancy samples at Lincoln Christmas Market earlier this month.
So I’m basically just looking for suggestions, as tomorrow I’m off to Beer Ritz to purchase the beers and on the way back stopping at Leeds Markets for the cheese.
Cheeses I have so far:
White Stilton Strawberries and cream – I’m thinking a strawberry Belgian beer
Yorkshire Black - a local Yorkshire beer?
Maplewood Smoked (just like Applewood smoked really) – a smoky porter or Rauchbier
Lancashire Apple, Raisin and Cinnamon – I’m stumped on this one!
I also have a bottle of aged Orval, but I’m greedily undecided as to whether I’m willing to share this with anyone!

Cheese selection at Lincoln Christmas Market. The difficult bit will be finding beers to accompany all of these!

Maplewood smoked must surely go with Schlenkerla Marzen. Obvious, I know, but works a treat.
Serve some pickles with the cheese and have a bottle of gueuze to hand, Cantillon I suggest, and it will be a revelation.
White stilton with strawberries and cream – this needs something at the other end of the spectrum… I always find a stout works well with strawberries, but then again, I have odd tastes…
Whatever, have a great evening! (Quote)

PS. keep the Orval to yourself and have with some of their cheese… sublime. (Quote)

Beer Ritz crackers!! That made me laugh a lot!
Save the Orval for when I come up to visit
I’d go for a stout with the white stilton and strawberries, full bodied 5%, maybe sam smith oatmeal.
I’ve no idea what yorkshire black is… is it strong, mild, hard, soft? Go with an IPA for balance with the other choices, Goose Island or something like that. If you want Yorkshire then… try a Yorkshire IPA!
I’d avoid smoke with smoke on the applewood as they’ll cancel each other out. I’d suggest something light, sweet and fruity, a sweetened kriek (not too sweet though!).
With the Lancashire apple I’d go with Chimay Blue or something like that.
That’s what I’d choose. It’s a decent mix of beers plus they are food friendly, easy to get hold of and most people will like the beers.
I haven’t had cheese and beer together for ages!! (Quote)

Hi
A bloke came down our local a few months ago with some Yorkshire Black – it was delicious!
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find this at any of the cheese shops I go to; does anyone know where to get hold of this in York?

February 9th, 2011 at 3:03 pm@Russ, Anthony’s Piazza in the Corn Exchange in Leeds has a fromagerie which is good, plus the farmers markets are usually the best plce for cheese!
Not sure about York, but at Christmas the markets and some of the independent shops usually have some.
Never seen the Yorkshire Black again since, if you see that chap in your local again please ask him for us! (Quote)
